Headache and the 24 Hour on Call Shift
The 24-hour on-call shift presents medical residents with a variety of unique circumstances that can affect their health and well-being. Residents can be subjected to sleep deprivation, increased stress levels, and a variety of other issues. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of on-call shifts on the level of headache-related disability among medical residents. During the study, residents completed questionnaires that measured symptoms of headache and sleep quality. The questionnaires included the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MDAS), Headache Impact Test (HIT), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. The residents also completed the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), which measures their level of anxiety and depression.
On July 1, 2012, all Quebec residency programs adopted the 16-hour in-hospital call schedule, a move that came after 5 years of meticulous and laborious research. This change was the result of intense debates and many questions. If residents’ call hours are different during their training, they will achieve their learning goals more efficiently and be better prepared for their supervisory roles after graduation. In addition, physicians will have more time for family life, as their days will not be consumed with emergency calls.
